His Excellency, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, CON

His Excellency, Dr Olusegun Mimiko is the immediate past Governor of Ondo State (2009-2017). He is a medical practitioner who has had practice experience both at the public and private sectors, Dr Mimiko was twice Commissioner for Health; and later, Secretary to Government in his home State of Ondo; and Federal Minister of Housing and Urban Development, before contesting to be Governor in 2007.

As Governor, Dr. Mimiko put in place a bouquet of programmes that defined clearly his social democratic ideological commitment. These covered all the critical sectors of life, including education, health, urban renewal, agriculture, job creation, women and youth development. Such was the success of these programmes that they all garnered, before Dr. Mimiko left office, accolades from relevant international agencies like the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Washington, DC; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; World Bank; UN Habitat, etc. He also got recognized on many occasions through sundry awards conferred on him by several local organizations.

Among his numerous awards include 2009 Governor of the Year Award by Financial Standard Newspaper; Honorary Fellow of the Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology of Nigeria; An Achiever of Our Time Award by Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, (FRCN) Ibadan; Award of Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Honoris Causa) by the Federal University of Technology, Akure; Patron, Nigerian Students Union, United Kingdom; Omoluwabi Ataata Confernment  by the Coalition of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups; 2011 Governor of the Year Award by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS); UN-Habitat Roll call of Honour; 2011 Governor of the Year Award by BEN Television London; Excellence Award by Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA); Investiture as Grand Patron by Nigeria Institute of Public Relations; Zik Leadership Award; 2012 Governor of the Year Award by African Newspapers of Nigeria PLC (The Nigerian Tribune Newspaper)

Dr. Mimiko is a Honorary Fellow of the Society of Obstetrics & Gynecology of Nigeria (SOGON); and the National Post-Graduate Medical College. He also holds Honorary Doctorate degree of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). He is also a Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. Under his leadership, Ondo State won the two editions of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Leadership Challenge for Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization.

A Distinguished Alumnus of University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Dr Mimiko is the pioneer Gold Medalist of Adetokunbo Lucas School of Public Health of same university. He is also (one of two Nigerians) listed on the United Nations Habitat Roll of Honor for quality leadership. He has since leaving office as Governor delivered lectures on Public Health in Nigeria, Chatham House UK, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, the NIPSS, Kuru, among many others.

He was, in 2014, conferred with the National Honors of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON). He is married to Olukemi, also an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University and they are blessed with children.
